In the Ladies’ Enclosure is an oil on canvas created by Amrita Sher-Gil in 1938, a number of years after her return to India.
The work was painted at the artist’s household property in Gorakhpur and showcases a gaggle of ladies engaged in myriad actions in an area. At 37.8 Cr it is the second- costliest Indian artwork bought globally, and the world record for the Amrita.
The work highlights her growth and development as an artist and is a culmination of years of coming into her own.
