Mother India, is a famous painting by Amrita Sher-Gil. Amrita Shergil was heavily influenced by Realism, Sher-Gil strived to portray the lives of people living in her local community. She kept experimenting with her visual language in order to distill the hopelessness of their lives.
"Mother India" allows us to make an observation about the different approaches she has for her paintings done in India and Europe. Her palette and her treatment are widely divergent in the works done in the two countries.
